Key Facts about Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder (FASD) - Special Education

Updated FASD Insert for Special Education in Ontario Schools - Eighth Edition

This fact sheet is intended for anyone who supports people with FASD at school or in the education system.

Currently, Ontario Teacher’s Colleges are using the text “Special Education In Ontario Schools - Eighth Edition”. There is one page dedicated to Fetal Alcohol Syndrome, which unfortunately is no longer a recommended diagnostic term used in Canada as per the Canadian Guidelines for FASD Diagnosis 2015. The Statistics are outdated and misleading, and the language used is stigmatizing and certainly does not capture the complexity and the unique nuances often experienced by those impacted by prenatal alcohol/substance exposures.

This insert provides accurate, research-informed guidance for educators, administrators promoting a better understanding and inclusion of students with FASD across Ontario schools.
